General Moot

The Monash Law Students' Society General Moot Competition is the premier mooting competition offered by the Monash Law Students' Society.  In 2011 this competition involved over 45 teams of Monash Law students.  This competition is broken up into Junior and Senior divisions.  Junior division is reserved for students who have not yet completed Property Law B.  Once students have completed this unit at Monash University (or equivalent unit at another University), they are ineligible for Junior Division.  Moot Court problems are drawn from Contract, Tort or Criminal Law for the Junior Division, and from all major fields of law for the Senior Division of the competition.  This competition tests both students' research, formulation of legal argument and public presentation skills.

Teams consist of two or three law students - two students act as barristers and an optional third student can act as a solicitor.  Once a team receives the legal problem (typically 2-3 days beforehand) they must research their legal arguments and possible opposition arguments and prepare a legal memorandum of argument.  These memorandum will be exchanged between teams on the morning of each competition round, allowing teams to prepare to rebut their oppositions arguments.  The evening then brings about the actual moot, where teams vocalise their legal arguments in front of an adjudicator in a courtroom scenario

The teams are awarded a score for their performance based on the strength of their legal memorandum, their legal arguments and their presentation skills.  Monash law students from all year levels are encouraged to enter.

The senior division winning team will have the opportunity to represent Monash University at the 2012 ALSA Conference (held in the 2012 mid-year break).
