IHL Moot
The IHL Moot is not your average advocacy competition. Like the General and First Year Moot, the IHL Moot develops communication skills and challenges the ability of participants to answer sharp responses to unrehearsed questions from the bench. However, unlike the traditional competitions, the IHL Moot stems from a specific problem question relating to an area of international law. Problems in the IHL Moot raise interesting questions of international and social relevance and provide an opportunity for competitors to walk in the shoes of an international humanitarian law barrister, making submission to a hypothetical international law tribunal.
Students who have not yet studied any international law are advised to do some basic preliminary research on the sources and operation of international law.
The IHL Moot makes use of a single problem throughout the entire competition. Teams of two or three (senior/junior counsel and an optional solicitor to aid with research) compete in a single preliminary round (Tuesday 31st August), a Quarter Final (Tuesday 7th September), a Semi Final (Thursday 9th September) and the Grand Final to be held on Tuesday 14th September. The winner of this will have the opportunity to represent Monash University at the ALSA conference in Melbourne in 2011.
