Letter Writing

The Monash Law Students' Society Letter Writing Competition is one of the simplest competitions to compete in.  The competition requires students to generate a 'letter of advice' to a fictional client based on a fictional legal problem.

The legal problem is released on the Monash Law Students' Society website, so students have ample time to research and publish their letter of advice.  The legal problem can be based on any field of law and students are able to view the problem prior to registering for the competition (i.e. check if they are able to tackle the problem adequately).

Individuals are awarded a score for their letter based on their clarity of explanation to a lay person, depth of argument and overall professionalism of writing.  Monash law students from second year or higher are encouraged to enter.

Competition dates for 2012 are as follows:

  • Registration and submission of letters for competition opens:  Monday 7 May 2012
  • Registration and submission of letters for competition closes:  Friday 17 August 2012 at 5pm
  • Top papers are selected and authors notified:  Thursday 30 August 2012
  • Grand Final Night and presentation of winning letter:  Wednesday 5 September 2012
