'Just Leadership' Program 2012
The 2012 ‘Just Leadership’ Program is an exciting initiative from the Social Justice and Equity Portfolio of Monash University Law Students’ Society. In its third year, the Program aims to develop the practical leadership skills of participants and raise awareness of social justice issues. The Program achieves this objective by encouraging talented law students to become practically involved with people and organisations that are innovative, practice ethical leadership and promote social justice within the community.
It is envisaged program participants will utilise contact with guest speakers from key organisations to foster meaningful, long-term practical engagement in leadership development and the promotion of change in areas of their personal interest. It is also hoped that students will take a social justice perspective with them into their career. Participants should expect to develop both leadership and teamwork skills through working with others and meeting leaders from large corporations, law firms, organisations, academia and community organisations.
Notable individual speakers in previous years have included The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Lieutenant Governor of Victoria, Marilyn Warren AC, QC, Judge Paul Grant SC, Matthew Albert, Jessie Taylor, Attorney-General Robert Clark and former Attorney-General Rob Hulls.
Students selected for the program will work on a practical project, based on their personal interests. In previous years, the projects have included a policy submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission on reform to Federal Court Discovery Rules, a community consultation paper for the Victorian Law Reform Commission, a submission to the Parliament of Australia's Joint Select Committee and an on-campus event and submission to the Faculty of Law to raise awareness for mental health issues among law students and in the legal profession.
The 2012 ‘Just Leadership’ Program: Be inspired. Collaborate. Lead. Create change.
