Revamped Social Justice & Equity Seminar Series

We are excited to announce the revamped Social Justice & Equity Seminar (SJE) series. Formerly overseen by the SJE Equity Officer, the series has transformed since the Equity Office's dismantling in 2023.
 
The initiative previously featured eight seminars covering topics like First Nations Rights, Environmental Justice, Modern Slavery/Human Trafficking, Gender-based Violence, and Transgender and Gender-diverse Rights and the Law. The 2022 series introduced a session on Consent and the Law. With the Equity Office removed in 2023, each SJE office; Women's, Person Of Colour (POC), Queer, and the new Indigenous office conducted a seminar addressing issues within their communities.
 
2023 Seminars Summary:

• Women's Seminar: Focused on retaining and advancing women in law, addressing challenges.

• Queer Seminar: Explored creating inclusive spaces for the Queer community in the legal sector.

• POC Seminar: Aimed to empower POC students, covering diversity, inclusion, and career development.

• Indigenous Office Incarceration Nation Screening & Panel: The inaugural event highlighted government intervention impact on Indigenous Australians, connecting to ongoing referendum debates and the crucial Indigenous voice in Parliament.

 
2024 Developments:

• POC Office considering collaboration with the Indigenous Office. 

• Queer Office transforming the seminar into a training workshop for inclusive leadership.

• Women's Office changing to an Women's Leadership Seminar, focusing on boosting women's leadership traits in law.

• Indigenous Panel - ‘What now? The next steps post failed referendum, addressing the aftermath and potential treaty discussions.

• Women's Leadership Seminar:  May 16, 2024, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Online via Zoom.

• Queer Seminar: September 17, 2024, TBC. Monash University Clayton Campus.
